This edition of Thomas Mann’s Short Fiction was produced from various translations. “Bashan and I” was translated by Hermann George Scheffauer and originally published in 1923. “Tristan,” “Tonio Kröger,” and “Death in Venice” were translated by Kenneth Burke and originally published in 1924. “Disorder and Early Sorrow” was translated by Hermann George Scheffauer and originally published in 1926. “Little Herr Friedemann,” “Little Louise,” “Tobias Mindernickel,” “The Wardrobe,” “The Path to the Cemetery,” “The Infant Prodigy,” “At the Prophet’s,” and “How Jappe Fought Do Escobar” were also translated by Hermann George Scheffauer and originally published in 1928. “Mario and the Magician” was translated by H. T. Lowe-Porter and originally published in 1930.
