’Midst the Wild Carpathians

Mór Jókai

Description

After being released from Tartar captivity, Michael Apafi, a Transylvanian noble, is installed as Prince of Transylvania by the Ottoman Sultan. He must now secure his authority and deal with conflicting interests both domestic and foreign. With his realm located between the Ottoman Sultan and the Austrian Emperor, its independence is in constant danger.

’Midst the Wild Carpathians is one of Mór Jókai’s most famous works. Written in the context of budding Hungarian nationalism, the novel is a fictionalized retelling of real events of 17th Century Transylvania.
